Bob Fioretti’s path in law and advocacy is a compelling story of dedication, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to justice. His career reflects a deep understanding of the legal system and a passion for serving the people of Illinois. This post explores the milestones of his journey, the principles that guide his work, and the impact he aims to make as a candidate for Illinois Attorney General.

Early Foundations and Legal Education

Bob’s journey began with a solid foundation in education and a clear vision for public service. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side in the Pullman and Roseland neighborhoods, he is a first-generation American whose father immigrated through Ellis Island and worked at the historic Pullman train car company. Supported by a Pullman Foundation scholarship, Bob attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a degree in Political Science and served as Student Body President.

He later earned his law degree from Northern Illinois University College of Law, where he graduated with distinction, served as President of the NIU National Alumni Association, and taught as an adjunct faculty member. His early exposure to community advocacy and public policy shaped a career centered on fairness, accessibility, and service.

A Distinguished Legal Career: From Practice to Public Service

Bob Fioretti’s legal career spans over three decades of advocating for justice in both the courtroom and the community. As Senior Supervising Attorney in the General Litigation Division under Mayor Harold Washington, he managed more than 500 civil rights cases and personally tried over 100, many of which influenced state and federal law. His experience as Special Assistant Attorney General of Illinois and Special Assistant State’s Attorney earned him respect across party lines for his skill, fairness, and independence.

Bob has never shied away from tough cases. He represented a wrongfully convicted man who spent 11½ years in prison, securing his release, exoneration, and a gubernatorial pardon. He also fought for Baby Tamia’s family in a high-profile adoption case that exposed serious flaws in Illinois law and led to reforms protecting children and families. These cases exemplify Bob’s belief that the law must serve people, not power.

Proven Public Service and Leadership

Elected Alderman of Chicago’s 2nd Ward in 2007 and re-elected in 2011, Bob brought his legal expertise to policymaking. His ward stretched from the West Side through the South Loop and Bronzeville, among the city’s most diverse districts. As alderman, he prioritized education, job creation, and public safety while holding City Hall accountable to residents.

• Protecting Students: Bob worked with educators, law enforcement, and parents to launch Operation Safe Passage, ensuring children could travel safely to and from school. He also directed TIF resources to build the new Jones College Prep High School, keeping families in the city.

• Creating Jobs: He supported major projects that created thousands of jobs, including United Airlines’ relocation downtown, the Rush Medical Center redevelopment, and the expansion of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

• Fighting Food Deserts: He brought Pete’s Fresh Market to Chicago’s West Side, expanding access to affordable groceries while creating local jobs.

• Expanding Green Space: Recognized as Legislator of the Year by Friends of the Parks, Bob invested in parks and safe spaces for families across his ward.

His record reflects collaborative leadership focused on results that improve lives.

Advocacy and Integrity in Action

At every stage, Bob Fioretti has combined advocacy with integrity. His legal and public service work is rooted in transparency, ethics, and a belief that trust in the justice system must be earned. He has served on the Illinois Supreme Court’s Character and Fitness Committee, the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee, and led civic groups such as the Historic Pullman Foundation, demonstrating his lifelong engagement with Chicago’s communities and institutions.

Bob’s advocacy extends beyond the courtroom. He works with community organizations, law enforcement, and policy leaders to develop solutions that enhance safety while protecting civil rights. His approach is practical, fair, and people-centered.

A Legacy of Trust and Service

Bob Fioretti’s lifelong commitment to justice transcends politics. His leadership offers a path forward, grounded in experience, empathy, and accountability. As Illinois faces challenges of corruption, public mistrust, and safety concerns, Bob stands ready to restore confidence in the Attorney General’s office.

He and his wife, Nicki, live on historic Jackson Boulevard, continuing their active community involvement. His dedication to fairness, independence, and integrity continues to guide every decision he makes.
