Lincoln-Douglas Debate Series: Update from Ottawa

August 22, 2026 | A Narrative of Leadership and Presence

Bob Fioretti standing confidently on a historic stage in Ottawa for the first debate.

I showed up in Ottawa.

Where was Kwame?

I invited Attorney General Kwame Raoul to participate in a seven-debate series across Illinois, following the anniversary dates and communities of the historic Lincoln-Douglas debates. Attorney General Raoul received my invitation, but he has not responded.

Debate #1 moved forward because the people of Illinois deserve a direct and honest conversation about the record of the Attorney General’s office and the future of public service in our state.

Before a bipartisan crowd of Ottawa residents and visitors, I outlined my vision to become Illinois’ People’s Attorney. Illinois deserves an Attorney General who shows up, listens, answers difficult questions, and puts Illinois families' interests ahead of politics and national headlines.

As Attorney General, I will prioritize public safety, stand with crime victims and law enforcement, confront public corruption, strengthen transparency and open-government enforcement, protect consumers from fraud and abuse, and hold powerful interests accountable. I will refocus the Attorney General’s office on the everyday concerns of Illinois residents and make it more responsive to the people it was created to serve.

The contrast in Ottawa was clear. I was present, prepared, and ready to explain my agenda. Kwame Raoul was absent and silent.

This was Debate #1 of our Lincoln-Douglas debate series. At every stop, I will continue taking my case directly to the people of Illinois. Until the current Attorney General agrees to face Illinois voters and defend his record, I will keep asking:

WHERE IS KWAME?

My Priorities for the People of Illinois

Public Safety & Accountability Removing the politicization of law enforcement and ensuring our communities are safe from rising crime rates.

Transparency A commitment to open government where the people have access to the information they deserve.

Consumer Protection Aggressively defending Illinois residents from fraud, predatory practices, and corporate misconduct.

Direct Representation Being present for the people of Illinois, from Chicago to Cairo, and everywhere in between.

Witness the Contrast

The contrast between presence and absence, between a vision for the future and the status quo, was clear in Ottawa. I encourage you to watch the footage from Ottawa, Illinois, and share this narrative with your friends and family. It is time for an Attorney General who shows up for you.
